WHAT MAKES THE SKIM CLASSROOM UNIQUE

FOCUS ON SELF- REGULATION

Current research shows that self-regulation (both cognitive and social emotional) has a stronger association with school readiness than IQ or entry-level reading or math skills. Good self-regulation includes the ability to stay on task, ignore distractions, and hold two strategies in mind at the same time, as well as the development of self-discipline and the motivation to succeed. Aspects of self-regulation such as the ability to pay attention, remember on purpose, plan one’s actions, reflect on one’s thinking, and cooperate and act empathetic toward peers, heavily influence a child’s future success in school. Inadequate self-regulation is associated with discipline problems and poor social adjustment.

WHAT IS SELF-REGULATION

The term self-regulation refers to the capacity to control one’s impulses, both to stop doing something, if needed (even if one wants to continue doing it) and to start doing something, if needed (even if one doesn’t want to do it). Self-regulation is not to be confused with obedience or compliance; when children are truly self-regulated they behave the same way whether or not an adult is watching
Self-regulation is not limited to the social-emotional domain; it can also apply to cognitive behaviors, such as remembering or paying attention.

WHY IS SELF-REGULATION IMPORTANT

There is growing evidence that many children begin school lacking self-regulation and this lack of self-regulation may have a great impact on how well they do in school and later in life. Early self-regulation levels have a strong association with school readiness and they are closely associated with academic achievement.

Kids with good self-regulation can pay attention to classroom activities and ignore distractions, remember the teacher's directions long enough to carry out a task and resist impulses.
